I Looked Away for 2 Seconds — Here’s What Happened

It happened fast. I glanced at my phone to check the time, and suddenly the car ahead slowed down.

What went wrong? Those two seconds meant I didn’t notice the brake lights. I almost rear-ended the car in front.

Why it happens: Distractions are everywhere, and it’s easy to think a quick glance won’t matter. Teens often underestimate how fast things change on the road.

The lesson: Even a momentary distraction can have major consequences. Awareness is your most important tool.

What to do instead: Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind focused. If you must check something, pull over safely.

Most mistakes start small — until they don’t.
